The son who came home
Jesus told a story about a young man who left his father and travelled far from home. He made choices that eventually left him with nothing and living in great need.
Realising how far his life had fallen, he decided to return home. He did not expect to be welcomed back as a son. He planned only to admit what he had done and ask to be treated as one of his father’s workers.
While he was still some distance away, his father saw him and ran to meet him. Instead of rejecting or punishing him, the father embraced him, welcomed him home and celebrated his return.
The son could not undo his past, but he could turn around and come home. His father’s love was waiting for him before he had found the right words or proved that he had changed.
Christians believe that the father in this story shows what God is like. He does not stop loving people when they lose their way, and he welcomes those who turn back towards him.
They believe that Jesus offers forgiveness and a new beginning. We do not need to repair ourselves before coming to him. We can return as we are and, with the help of the Holy Spirit, begin living in a new direction.
