What does it mean to be a Christian?
A Christian is someone who places their faith in Jesus and chooses to follow him. Christians believe that Jesus is God, who came to live among us, reveal what God is like and invite people into a relationship with him.
Christians believe that Jesus died for human sin and rose from the dead. Through him, God offers forgiveness, reconciliation and new life as gifts of his grace.
Christians do not believe that they are saved by living perfect lives or doing enough good things. Salvation is received through faith in Jesus—not because anyone has earned it, but because God loves us and is merciful towards us.
Being a Christian therefore means more than agreeing with a set of beliefs or attending church. It means trusting Jesus, accepting God’s grace, learning from him and allowing his love and teaching to shape the way we live.
Christians seek to love God and other people, forgive, serve those in need and live with truth, mercy, humility and courage. These actions do not earn God’s acceptance. They are a response to his freely given love and grace.
Christians grow through prayer, reading the Bible, worshipping with other Christians and putting Jesus’ teaching into practice. Yet Christians are not perfect. They still make mistakes, experience doubt and sometimes lose their way.
Jesus understands human weakness and does not expect people to become perfect before coming to him. Christians believe that they can turn back to God, receive forgiveness and continue growing with his help.
Christians believe that the Holy Spirit is God at work within them, helping them trust Jesus, resist harmful ways of living and gradually become more like him. They also belong to the Church, the worldwide community of people who follow Jesus and support one another in faith.
To be a Christian is to belong to Jesus: to trust him, receive God’s grace and accept his forgiveness, and follow him through the joys, difficulties and ordinary moments of life.
Christians believe that Jesus welcomes us as we are and helps us become the people God created us to be. He offers a life shaped by love, a lasting relationship with God and the gift of eternal life with him—not as something we earn, but as a gift of grace.
