How can we come to know God and grow closer to him?
Knowing God means more than learning facts about him. Christians understand it as a personal relationship in which we learn to trust God, respond to him and allow that relationship to shape how we live.
Christians believe that God makes himself known and invites people into a relationship with him. They believe he came to earth as Jesus, revealing what he is like and making it possible for people to know him personally.
That relationship may begin through an honest desire to seek God, learning about Jesus and speaking to God in prayer. It does not require perfect understanding or complete certainty before taking the first step.
A relationship with God can grow through prayer, reading the Bible, worshipping with other Christians and putting the teachings of Jesus into practice. As with any relationship, it develops through time, trust, honesty and continued commitment.
Christians believe that people can know God through Jesus because they believe God came to earth in him. Through Jesus’ life and teaching, people can see what God is like. Through his death and resurrection, Christians believe that human sin can be forgiven and the separation between humanity and God overcome.
They believe that people grow closer to God by spending time with him in prayer, learning about him from the Bible, sharing in the life of the Church and allowing their faith to shape the way they live.
