Can faith and science fit together?

Science helps us investigate the natural world through observation, evidence, testing and the willingness to revise our ideas when better evidence appears.

Christian faith asks questions about God, meaning, purpose, moral responsibility and how we should live. These questions are not always answered by measuring the physical world, although faith should still take scientific evidence seriously.

Jesus encouraged people to love God with their minds as well as their hearts:

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”

Matthew 22:37

Many Christians understand the universe, life and the human mind through the discoveries of science while also believing that creation ultimately depends upon God.

Christians do not all interpret every biblical passage in the same way. They hold different views about creation, evolution, miracles and how God acts within the natural world.

Difficulties can arise when religious texts are treated as though they were written as modern scientific reports, or when science is expected to answer every question about meaning, value and God.

Even if science were one day able to explain more fully how the universe began, ask whether that would rule out God or simply describe the means by which the universe came to be. In the same way, establishing that God exists would not make well-supported scientific explanations any less valid.

Science and faith may approach reality from different directions. It is all right to keep exploring whether, and how, they might complement each other.
